The Story Behind Spike’s K9 Fund

Spike’s K9 Fund was founded by James “Jimmy” Hatch, a retired U.S. Navy Special Warfare Operator (SEAL) and Purple Heart recipient. Throughout his service, Jimmy experienced firsthand the lifesaving bravery of military K9s. On his final deployment, he was critically wounded, and K9 Remco heroically charged the enemy to protect Jimmy and his teammates, sacrificing his own life so they could return home to their families. Inspired by this profound sacrifice and in honor of his canine teammates, Jimmy created Spike’s K9 Fund. What started as one veteran’s promise to fallen friends has grown into a nationwide mission. Spike’s K9 Fund remains laser-focused on ensuring every K9 hero has the chance for a full, safe life, during and after their service.

Why Working Dogs Need Our Help?

Every day, police, military, and Search & Rescue K9s risk their lives to protect ours. They detect explosives, track missing people, apprehend dangerous suspects, and help save lives during disasters. Yet too many serve without the protection and care they need. In fact, 1 in 5 police dogs in the U.S. patrols without a ballistic vest because their department can't afford one. As Jimmy says, "Dogs are not volunteers—it's our job to protect them." Many K9 units also lack funding for emergency veterinary care and specialized training, leaving these courageous dogs at greater risk of injury or worse. Spike's K9 Fund exists to help close that gap—providing lifesaving equipment, emergency medical support, and critical resources so no K9 hero has to serve without the protection they deserve.

How does your help make an impact?

Your support helps provide:

  • Life-Saving Gear – Ballistic vests, heat alarm systems, tracking harnesses, and other protective equipment that keeps K9s safe in the line of duty.

  • Training & Wellness – Advanced training that strengthens K9 teams and helps prevent injuries.

  • Critical Medical Care – Emergency veterinary care, surgeries, rehabilitation, and medications for active and retired K9s.

  • Retirement Support – Ongoing veterinary care, orthopedic beds, and mobility equipment to give retired K9 heroes the comfort they've earned.

What Does this Mean to RawDog K9?

As a veteran-based company, RawDog K9's mission to provide the highest-quality treats and products for our canine companions runs deep. Health is important, but more importantly, it is the foundation upon which all dogs can thrive and live to their fullest potential.

As owners of young working dogs ourselves, we started RawDog K9 to provide our own dogs with what we saw as missing in the industry. Keeping our dogs healthy and fulfilled should never be out of reach for any owner, handler, operator, or family.

The RawDog K9 family is built on our love and passion for dogs, and we believe deeply in the mission of Spike's K9 Fund because, as Jimmy says, "Dogs are not volunteers—it's our job to protect them."

Our goal is to help provide every opportunity for all dogs to receive the best possible care—from the building blocks of proper nutrition to the training, equipment, and services they need to perform their jobs and continue thriving throughout their lives.
