Training a Reward-Driven Dog?

Why Texture, Timing & Scent Matter

All dogs can be food motivated—but not all food works as motivation. Especially with protection, scent detection, and agility dogs, reward value isn’t just about taste. It’s about the moment, the delivery, and the payoff.

Three Factors That Determine Reward Power:

  1. Texture:
Soft treats are quick to swallow = better for fast reps. Crunchy treats create a reset moment = good for drive capping.
Pro Tip: Use soft dehydrated liver chunks for reps, pig ears or trachea for end-of-session “jackpot” reward.

  2. Scent:
Scent drives interest before the taste ever hits. High-protein treats like beef lung, chicken feet, or liver work better than processed biscuits because they have a natural, primal smell.

  3. Timing:
Reward during the behavior for engagement, reward after the behavior for stability. Don’t waste high-value treats for things your dog already knows—save them for shaping, breakthroughs, and proofing.
